Nice to look at and have on whatever surface you use to clean or repair your rifle , soft pad is good to set your parts or rifle and not potentially damage them, to me that is the reason for owning one. . I use this while cleaning my rifle , and next to a vice to set parts while repairing or modifying . Sure you can use anything soft, even a towel, but this is easy to store and reuse and fun to look at all the anatomy of the Rifle.
